Jay has been making sails for the Ultimate 20 since boat #1. When the boat was first introduced, Jay was selected as the class sailmaker because of his long history designing fully-battened mains and his reputation for consistent high-quality manufacturing. We have continued our involvement with the class. It is a great boat that we really enjoy sailing, The racing and the people are just terrific. Everyone is excited that the boat has a builder again and anticipate seeing even more boats on the water.
We continue to work on sail design, making and testing incremental changes, incorporating some small changes to our designs from our experience racing the boat as well as from feedback from other sailors. We are fortunate to have input and sail testing help from John Andrew, 2003 National Champion. Most recently, we worked on a new spinnaker shape which projects to windward and runs deep very well. We have also added another choice in jibs which is a “wave” jib that is slightly fuller with a more rounded entry for sailors who typically sail in more chop than breeze.
Mainsails feature a radial head and clew with a cross-cut center section. Battens areadjusted with keyed tensioners which are very easy and accurate. The big window gives a picture window on the world. Jibs are tri-radial to better take advantage of cloth strength properties and include a Gear guard to keep spinnaker sheets from getting caught at the jib tack. Spinnakers are tri-radial with a center horizontal mid-section and include an adjustable luff cord.
